Electron Beam Tomography

Dramatically different from conventional (mechanical) CT scanners, Imatron's patented electron beam technology and unique design offer diagnosticians scan times as fast as 50 and 100 milliseconds.

*In addition to routine cross sectional imaging of all body organs, EBT is able to evaluate physiology and blood flow and to perform any other examination where speed is essential.

While manufacturers of conventional CT scanners (i.e., spiral, helical, multislice) have tried to access this important and fast-growing market, they have been hampered by the physical limitations of a mechanical design dependentupon multiple moving components, which must rotate completely around the CT structure itself. These include the x-ray tube, digital detectors and a variety of electronics.

As centrifugal forces increase in inverse proportion with increasing rotation speed, conventional CT manufacturers have been forced to spend ten years of development to increase image acquisition speed by 50%, from 1 second, to one-half second. In contrast, Imatron's unique electron beam technology acquires images in as little as 50 msec (one twentieth of a second), many times faster than the fastest conventional CT. The result: clear, "frozen" images of moving structures (such as the heart) that offer extremely diagnostic images for analysis by physicians. This is particularly important in the assessment of early stage disease, or to rule out the presence of disease.

Recent enhancements by conventional CT manufacturers have been "virtual improvements" that work, for example, at a single, theoretically constant, heart rate (which is a clinical non-reality), or by delivering significantly greater radiation exposure.
